In the last few years Connecticut has enacted new driving laws for teen drivers. These new laws were created in response to the increasing amount of accidents involving new teen drivers. It appears that there are more and more accidents involving teens. Many of these accidents are fatal causing pain and suffering for families and communities. The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles has a list of all the driving laws for 16 and 17-year old drivers. Do you think that these laws are too harsh or not harsh enough? Check out the links below and let me know what you think.

I do have to admit that I would not be happy with the new laws if I was 16 or 17. Being older though I have seen way to much and have been very lucky myself behind the wheel. The new laws are definitely not too harsh. Lives are precious and can not be replaced.
ReplyDeleteThe reason there are more accidents are because there are more teen drivers. How many of our parents had their own car when they were 16? How many kids in urban areas do you hear of dying in drunk driving accidents? It all starts with the parents, in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteNikki, this is true. There are more teen drivers now than when I was a teen and that wasn't all that long ago! I know that my mother made me wait until I was 18 to get my license because she wanted me to make sure I knew what I was doing! And I wasn't given a car as a gift either. I had to drive around my parent's clunker. So I agree that it all starts with the parents.
ReplyDeleteLisa, this is wonderful. You are encouraging others to respond. This topic would definitely ignite interest with secondary students. What kind of comments do you think they would post?
ReplyDeleteJudy,
ReplyDeleteI think students would post all kinds of comments from these laws being too strict to these laws helping to save lives. I think that students would respond to how these driving laws inpact them directly, especially if they work and/or have to drive an elderly caretaker or disabled parent around.
As a parent, I am definitely in favor of stricter driving laws. I was a pretty responsible 16 year old, but made some potentially dangerous driving choices at that age. If everyone has the same restrictions (not just the ones placed by parents) I think there will be less peer pressure to do foolish things. Driving gives teens an incredible freedom to get into trouble! (I know- I sound like an old fogie!)
ReplyDeleteAs a parent who someday will have a teenage driver-- I hope that the laws stay stringent. I know that teens are anxious to drive, but it is a hazard- and teens simply are less likely to pay full attention to the road. I find it hard myself sometimes with the kids, phones, etc. and I do not have to worry about peer pressure and all that comes with that.
