In recent years it seems that at least once a year there is a deadly school shooting that has taken place somewhere in the world. This has sparked controversy as to whether or not college students should be allowed to carry hand guns on campus. Most, if not all, campuses do not allow students to carry weapons. However, many students now walk in fear that if a shooting happens at their school they won't be able to defend themselves. Given that the second amendment tell us that we have the "right to bear arms," do you think that college students should be allowed to carry concealed handguns on campus? Check out some of the links below and post your thoughts.

In a world that has encountered uncertainty and the presence of the unknown looms at large, allowing college students to carry a weapon to protect themselves is only asking for more trouble. Who's to say that if someone had a bad day he/she wouldn't take it out and start firing away? The same holds true for how things are right now -- with no one to check our bags or pat us down for security purposes, we continue on with our daily lives focused on the things we need to get done individually. We don't worry or think that the person sitting next to us in a class or even walking the opposite way that we're about to cross paths with has any weapons on them, but we just don't know. Allowing that will only increase the fear for more potential danger and it will cause every person to be seen as a threat. The world does not need anymore violence to take over the peace we're trying to reach right now, so I do not think it's a good idea to allow college students to carry concealed handguns on campus. The purpose of college is to attain a higher education and additional knowledge for the field you plan on going into. Why draw the attention away from that?

ReplyDeleteOn Dateline last Friday they did a story on college students carrying firearms to school. It was scary because the students didn't know how to use the gun properly and were more of a danger than helpful. I have mixed feelings about this, but I'm leaning more towards no guns in school.
ReplyDeleteKatie I didn't see the Dateline special but I did hear a lot about this topic recently on the news. I absolutely agree with you that students may pose more danger than protection if they were allowed to carry firearms in schools. I know there are strong arguments on both sides of the issue but my concern also comes in regarding the fact that it doesn't take much to set some college students off, meaning that after a few drinks things that they never would have previously considered seem like a good idea. Now throw a gun into the mix and the unimaginable because reality.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I was thinking the same thing. These young college students partying and carry guns does not seem safe. They showed a clip on the Dateline episode where a man came into a classroom to talk about gun safety & the gun went off and shot him in the foot. Could you imagine that happening in a classroom? People would have to go through a special training program to show people how to use guns safely and responsibly. Will cost a lot of money!
ReplyDeleteReacting to the sound of a gun shot by flinching does not take away from someone's character. Not being around gun shooting my entire life, the sound would definitely make me flinch or duck for cover I am sure. Had something occurred further with President Obama and how he handled himself after that, then we would have something substantial to comment on. President Obama has never been in the armed services so gun practice is not part of his repetoire yet he is our Commander in Chief. I believe with the campaign he ran and his job as president so far, we as Americans, should have confidence on how he will handle tense or unique situations.
